English at KS3

In Key Stage 3, pupils will study a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction, including Shakespeare, poetry, plays, novels and functional texts. Key Stage 3 English lessons at the Skegness Academy allow pupils to engage with both written and spoken English, as well as drama. We are passionate about promoting and improving literacy amongst our pupils, and recognise the role that literacy skills play in all subject areas. Schemes of work are designed to prepare pupils for GCSE level studies right from year 7, with our curriculum closely mirroring the expectations of the new linear GCSE specification.

English at KS4

The Skegness Academy’s English Department recognises the integral role that we play in our pupils’ futures. As a core subject, all of the Academy’s pupils will study for their GCSE in English, earning a qualification that is vital for success in both further education and employment. Key Stage 4 English lessons allow all pupils to engage with the subject in a way that suits them, allowing them the opportunity to discuss important issues and broaden their perspectives in a safe and supportive learning environment.

In line with national changes, students will work towards acquiring GCSEs in both English Language and English Literature.

The English Department recognises the demands that GCSE study places upon pupils in years 10 and 11. In order to ease the pressure, we offer extra revision classes, catch-up sessions and after school ‘intervention’ sessions.

English at KS5

Students have the opportunity to continue their study of English at AS and A2 level in the Skegness Academy’s Sixth Form. The AQA English Literature course gives students the opportunity to engage with texts at a higher level, studying seminal texts from a wide range of genres, periods and cultures. Assessment is equally weighted between written assignments and examinations at the end of each academic year, and students will be fully supported throughout the year to ensure success.
