At the Skegness Academy we believe that dance plays an essential role in the progress of our pupils and provides valuable opportunities both in and out of the Academy. Dance allows pupils to develop and broaden their creativity as well as improve their performance skills. Dance lessons provide our pupils with a platform to develop their knowledge and understanding on a variety of topics and issues and allow them to take risks in a safe and secure learning environment.
Dance is offered at Key Stage 3 and our pupils study a wide range of dance styles, ideas and influences. This develops their co-ordination, spatial and dynamic awareness and choreographic skills. Within each topic pupils create short studies in the dance style or idea, at the end of each study pupils perform as a duet or group and are assessed on their performance, choreography and evaluation skills.
In Key Stage 4 pupils can access the BTEC First Award in Dance. This is equivalent to one A*- C GCSE. This vocational course develops performance skills and technique in different genres of dance.
Dance is also offered as an extra- curricular activity through lunch time clubs; pupils also have the opportunity to audition for the gifted and talented dance company which performs at the annual Dance Showcase and is made up of pupils across all year groups. They are also invited to perform at events in the community throughout the year as well as participating in professional dance workshops both within the Academy and externally.
GCSE Expressive Arts is available at Key Stage 4. This course allows pupils to explore creative skills in a range of artistic genres including dance, drama, creative writing and visual arts. For components one and two, pupils produce two performance pieces combining a minimum of two art forms which are assessed internally. The third and final component combines three art forms and is assessed externally.
BTEC Performing Arts is offered at Key Stage 4 and 5. At Key Stage 4, the course is made up of three units with the majority of work being assessed through performances and coursework. There is one examination unit, ‘Individual Showcase’, where pupils perform two solos of their choice and write a letter of application. This is marked externally. The majority of lessons taught are practical, focusing on the vocational aspect of the course. Pupils will study dance, drama and singing as well as focusing on career and pathways within the profession. The course culminates in a final Production unit in which pupils create their own performance from start to finish. This unit covers all aspects of Performing Arts, giving pupils the responsibility for marketing, lighting and sound, props, sets, production costs, costumes as well as writing, directing, choreographing and performing the show. This builds team work skills and can help prepare them for their future employment. Pupils are encouraged to perform as often as possible throughout the course. The BTEC First Award in Performing Arts is the equivalent to one A*- C GCSE.
At Key Stage 5, the BTEC National Certificate in Performing Arts is offered in the first year, and the Subsidiary Diploma in the second year; the Certificate is the equivalent to one AS level and the Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one A-level. We now also offer the Diploma at 90 and 120 credits which are equivalent to one and a half and two A Levels respectively. The units delivered vary each year, depending on the cohort of students. The core units include ‘Performing to an Audience’ and “Performing Arts Business”. The majority of lessons taught are practical, focusing on the vocational aspect of the course and work is assessed through performances and coursework. Students study dance, drama and singing as well as focusing on career and pathways within the profession. Pupils are encouraged to perform as often as possible throughout the course.
As part of the BTEC courses students have the opportunity to visit and undertake workshops at the Move It vocational exhibition in London, amongst others venues. These are valuable experiences which enable students to gain insight to the opportunities available in higher education.
All students have the opportunity to participate in the annual Academy show. Previous shows include pantomimes and showcases, however this year we are hoping to stage an academy wide musical theatre performance. Participation enables students to mix across the year groups, develop new skills and perform to the paying public. The show is a culmination of all the students’ hard work and is something we all look forward to each year.
